Entertainment Distribution Company is on of the British leading independent distributor that can make movies that are similar to British film kind of cinema and still be a blockbuster that can still attract a lot of audience.
It was founded in 1978. It continued its growth and success of the company since then. Building great film library can be counted as one of the success that they have achieved. One of the major releases of the company and big push towards their great success was The Lord of the Rings: Trilogy which was rated as one of the most thrilling and epic adventures in the history of moving cinema. The evidence of the greatness of the movie can be justified by winning of seventeen Academy Awards during last couple of years.
During the start of the company’s work and releases of the movies they achieved to collect a number of thirty-eight Oscars and twenty-two BAFTAs. They distribute films with variety and diversity range of genres like romantic comedy or real life dramas that in some way can link to our opening sequence. The films include Traffic, Million Dollar Baby, Brokeback Mountain.
Entertainment has had further success with other big box office hits such as Gangs of New York, Hairspray, Sex and the City ,Saw, 17 Again and The Final Destination franchise and British films such as Stormbreaker, Run Fat Boy Run and St Trinian’s 1 & 2. Future movies that they are planning to distribute are Hugo Cabret, which is the first film in 3D technology which basically highlights that the company is trying to follow newest technology and get in to the market.
Entertainment Distribution Company operates both in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It distributes DVD as well as licensing Pay-TV and Free-TV sectors.
Opening sequence research: Ransom (1996)
The film that I’ve chosen to talk about is Ransom which was made in 1996. It is mainly crime based film which with comparison to our opening sequence is completely different genre. The only thing that it has in common is the storyline which is mostly talking about kidnapping. The Ransom is common blockbuster with much known actors which is the thing that differ our opening sequence to the film because it shows two different types of cinema: British and American.
The opening sequence of the movie begins with a black screen which makes the audience feel more in to the film. This makes some kind of verisimilitude for the film. The other thing that makes audience more involved is the music that starts in the background when screen is still black. The music that it begins with is very dark and reminds us of something building up. Adding to it after 13 seconds we can hear police siren in the background which makes audience even more nervous and wonder.
The opening shot which the movie starts with is of a paramedics van going through city of New York. The shot is taken from high profile which indicates that we are in the city because there are some high buildings surrounding us. Then we see extreme wide shot with main landmarks of New York which audience can recognise. This moment then changes to kind of over the shoulder shot of a businessman which is still the same frame. In the same second as we see actor on the screen the colour changes from about 70% darkness to full colour which might create atmosphere of reality for the audience. Then we can see juxtaposition jumping to small child revealing which shows juxtaposition with group of adults having kind of company party and the small boy.
